So fresh so clean: Pablo’s Mk1
I guess you’re now used to see a lot of vintage aircooled VW in this blog and in my articles on various magazines: they’re for sure one of the coolest fields in automotive culture and an easy win to grab people attention.
Immagino vi stiate abituando a vedere una marea di vecchie Volkswagen raffreddate ad aria nel mio blog e nei miei articoli all’interno di varie riviste: sono senza dubbio uno dei settori più fighi nella cultura automobilistica ed una carta che non tradisce mai nella ricerca di attenzione da parte del pubblico.
But this time i want to bring you something different, something it’s harder to find around especially here in Italy. I’m talking about a watercooled vintage VW, a MK 1 Golf Gl to be precise.
Ma questa volta voglio portare alla vostra attenzione qualcosa di diverso, qualcosa che è più difficile trovare in giro specialmente in Italia. Sto parlando di una VW vintage raffreddata ad acqua, di una Golf Mk1 per la precisione.
This lovely built belongs to Pablo, a guy from Argentina that now lives here in Italy: he’s a great enthusiast in cars and customization and this is one of his favourite rides. I’ll let you know soon what else lays in his garage.
Questa mirabile realizzazione appartiene a Pablo, un ragazzo originario dell’Argentina ma che ora vive in Italia: è un grande appassionato di auto e personalizzazioni e questo è uno dei suoi mezzi preferiti. Vi farò presto vedere cos’altro giace nel suo garage.
He’s the president of the Screvw Loose crew, a group of VWs enthusiasts born in 2011 that i often meet at events in northern Italy and southern Europe. He found this car 3 years ago nearly 800 km far from his house.
È il presidente dello Screvw Loose, un gruppo di amici appassionati di VW formatosi nel 2011 e che incontro spesso agli eventi in Nord Italia e Sud dell’Europa. Ha trovato quest’auto 3 anni fa a circa 800 km da casa.
It needed a complete restoration so he re-built everything by himself, thanks to its experience in workshops as electrician and mechanic: he replaced rusty metal sheets, fixed engine, electrical system, bodywork, frame, suspensions and finally re-painted it in this gorgeous bordeaux that perfectly suits the car.
La macchina necessitava di un restauro completo così Pablo non si è perso d’animo e ha ricostruito tutto da se, grazie alla sua esperienza di meccanico ed elettrauto in concessionaria: ha sostituito le parti in metallo arrugginite o lesionate, riparato motore, impianto elettrico, carrozzeria, telaio, sospensioni e infine riverniciato il tutto in questo magnifico bordeaux che si sposa alla perfezione con l’auto.
The Mk 1 now sits 120mm lower thank to a TA complete kit and its small 1100 cc engine can now scream through an handcrafted inox exhaust. Under the wheel arches and almost touching them we find 4 1994 OZ Vega rims painted in gold, 15×6 on the front and 15×8 on the rear axle: they wear stretched Nankang 165 / 45 tyres. The gold nest, together with the chrome-finished dish create a perfect match with the body color.
La Mk1 ora si appoggia su un assetto completo a ghiera TA ribassato di 120 mm e il piccolo motore 1100 ora si fa sentire attraverso uno scarico artigianale in acciaio inox. All’interno dei passaruota, anche se a stento, troviamo 4 cerchi OZ Vega del 1994 scomponibili con la parte centrale verniciata in oro e il canale lucidato. Misurano 15×6 all’avantreno e ben 15×8 dietro grazie ad una modifica del canale e calzano gomme Nankang 165/45 che presentano il tipico effetto stretched. Oro e cromo creano una combo perfetta con il colore della carrozzeria.
On the exterior he removed side turn signals and replaced bumpers and plastic mouldings with the steel ones from the ’74 version. The chromed mirror comes from the USA counterpart of the Golf, the Rabbit. He also added a yellow wrap on the headlights.
Esternamente si segnalano inoltre la rimozione delle frecce laterali e la sostituzione di paraurti e modanature in plastica con le equivalenti in acciaio del model year ’74. Lo specchietto cromato proviene direttamente dalla cugina americana della Golf, la Rabbit. I fari sono stati mascherati con pellicola gialla.
Inside we find a GTI steering wheel, GTI, dashboard with extra-gauges, original seats and panels and a lovely Hurst shifter.
Dentro troviamo volante e strumentazione supplementare presi da una GTI, pannelli, sedili e cielo originali oltre a un bellissimo pomello Hurst.
The golden hour enhances all the reflections of the body panels and matches perfectly the tones of the car.
La luce del tramonto sottolinea ulteriormente tutti i riflessi dei pannelli del corpo vettura e crea una perfetta sinergia con i vari toni di colore.
The hardest thing to show in photo is just how low this Mk1 actually sits: maybe next image will explain better how stretched the tyres are and how close the lip is to the fenders.
Il fattore più impegnativo da mostrare in foto è quanto bassa e larga questa Mk1 in realtà sia: forse le prossime immagini mi aiuteranno a spiegarlo in maniera più efficace. Potete vedere quanto il cerchio fuoriesca rispetto alla spalla della gomma e quanto sia vicino al contatto con il passaruota.
I really hope watercooled Vags will take over because there is a great scene in the Us and central/northern Europe: it’s time to give boxy design some love!
Spero davvero che le Volkswagen raffreddate ad acqua prendano piede perchè esiste una grande scena negli Stati Uniti e nell’Europa centro-settentrionale: è l’ora di tirar fuori un po’ di passione per il design squadrato!

The Italian Drop is a crew of stanced aircooled VW enthusiasts that counts some of the coolest models in Italy. I was in contact with them thanks to my photos on the 2013 Volks’n’Roll and when Editrice Custom and Giulio Bardelli (the man behind the Top VW Show, more on that soon) invited me to grab some sets and shots at the Cruisin’ Rodeo and Top VW Show i knew they would have been there.
The Italian Drop è ungruppo di appassionati di vecchie VW raffreddate ad aria ultra-ribassate che può contare su alcuni degli esemplari più fighi in Italia. Ero in contatto con loro grazie ai post che avevo realizzato sul Volks’n’Roll e quando Editrice Custom e Giulio Bardelli (l’uomo dietro al Top VW Show, presto posterò materiale al riguardo) mi hanno invitato per realizzare un po’ di set e scatti al Cruisin’ Rodeo e al Top VW Show sapevo li avrei incontrati là.
The two events took place in San Martino del Lago, on a circuit near this small town about 30 km away from Cremona. My friend Simone Flash Benedetti, the official photographer and writer for Kustom World, Cruisin’ and Bikers Life (check his site, he’s really one of the most interesting and talented person in this field in italy and one those are helping me the most in gaining experience for my targets) was obviously there too: there was no need to say anything because both of us wanted to realize something cool with these guys.
I due eventi avevano luogo presso San Martino del Lago, su di un circuito vicino a questo paese a circa 30 km da Cremona. L’amico Simone Flash Benedetti, il fotografo ufficiale di Kustom World, Cruisin’ e Bikers Life (date un occhio al suo sito, è senza dubbio una delle persone più talentuose ed interessanti in questo settore in Italia e uno di quelli che più mi hanno aiutato e stanno aiutando nel far esperienza per i miei obiettivi) era ovviamente anch’egli là: ci è bastato uno scambio di sguardi per capire che entrambi volevamo realizzare qualcosa di livello con questi ragazzi.
We have a common idea in our mind, to give readers something different from the usual studio sets or conventional reportage: our aim was to render the feelings of a small experience, two hours of fun with a bunch of folks with a huge enthusiasm for old VW and sharing good times.
Avevamo un’idea comune nelle nostre menti, dare ai lettori qualcosa di diverdo dai soliti set in studio e reportage “convenzionali”: la nostra aspirazione era di restituire le sensazioni di una breve esperienza, 2 ore di divertimento con un gruppo di individui accomunati dalla grande passione per le vecchie VW e dal condividere momenti divertenti.
We started wandering around for the perfect spot but after a few minutes we realized that it was not a matter of places but a matter of mood: the right ride with the right people can bring the right point of view on any place and situation. The tiny streets beetween corn fields, a bar in an almost unheard village, an old farmstead, anything becomes unexpectedly magic
Abbiamo iniziato a girovagare per la pianura alla ricerca del posto ideale ma dopo un po’ ci siamo resi conto che non si trattava di una questione di spazi ma di atmosfera: i mezzi giusti con le persone giuste sono in grado di portare il giusto punto di vista su qualsiasi posto o circostanza. Le stradine tra i campi di granturco, un bar in una frazione sconosciuta, una vecchia cascina abbandonata, ogni cosa può diventare insospettabilmente magica.
We almost forgot time and space, just enjoyed to spend time with someone who wants to share his passion with the world. And this is really what pushes me to invest my time in going around searching for something different and worthy
Ci siamo quasi dimenticati del tempo e dello spazio, godendoci un po’ di tempo con qualcuno che desidera condividere la sua passione col resto del mondo. E questo è alla fine ciò che mi spinge davvero a investire il mio tempo nell’andare in giro a cercare qualcosa di interessante e meritevole.
