Invasion of Normandy – 68 years after
Don’t worry, i’m not about to announce a third world war: it’s only a funny way to describe the moltitude of US cars that took part in the last edition of the Dix Mille Tours. There is always one useful feature about American Cars, and the same goes for their racing counterparts: you can recognize them everytime and everywhere, even if you don’t see them.
Non preoccupatevi, non è l’annuncio di una terza guerra mondiale: è solo un modo “diverso” di descrivere la moltitudine di auto statunitensi che hanno preso parte all’ultima edizione della Dix Mille Tours. C’è sempre una caratteristica molto utile riguardo le auto provenienti da oltreoceano, ulteriormente amplificata quando si tratta di esemplari da gara: le s può riconoscere ovunque ed in qualsiasi circostanza, anche se non le si vede.
In facts they’re always the loudest things on wheels all around, no matter which category they belong to. To keep the USA flavour we could say that the Oscar for the loudest engine goes to the huge units under the long Corvette hoods. The generous 7 liters V8 scream on the straights like the WWII Merlin and Griffon Rolls Royce engines that pushed Spitifire and Mustangs.
Infatti sono sempre gli oggetti su ruote più rumorosi in cui ci si possa imbattere, non importa a quale categoria appartengano. Per mantenere questo clima Yankee potremmo dire che l’Oscar per il motore più rumoroso andrebbe senza dubbio alle unità montate sotto i kilometrici cofani delle Corvette. I Generosi V8 7 litri sbraitano sui rettilinei come i Rolls Royce Merlin e Griffon installati sugli Spitfire e Mustang della seconda guerra mondiale.
The names are those who made USA famous in track racing 4 / 5 decades ago so GT40, Cobra, Shelby, Corvette: it’s arguable that they produce a lot less models than european brands but we’ve to remember that races in Europe and in the rest of the world were a strong effort for factories that were investing in project outside United States so a lot less relevant for their internal market.
I nomi sono quelli che hanno reso gli Stati Uniti famosi sui tracciati di tutto il mondo 4-5 decadi fa per cui GT40, Cobra, Shelby, Corvette: si può obiettare che si tratti di pochi modelli rispetto a tutti quelli prodotti dai marchi europei contemporanei ma dobbiamo ricordarci che le gare in Europa e nel resto del mondo rappresentavano un grande sforzo per aziende che stavano investendo fuori dagli Stati Uniti per cui molto meno rilevanti per il loro mercato interno.
In addiction they developed many versions of these cars to mantain them competitive with the Italian, German and UK counterparts so many times we’ve different engines and layouts under similar bodies.
C’è inoltre da aggiungere che Ford e Chevrolet svilupparono numerose versioni di queste auto per mantenerle sempre competitive con le loro avversarie italiane tedesche ed inglesi, per cui spesso ci troviamo di fronte a strutture e motorizzazioni differenti sotto carrozzerie simili.
This red GT40 was dressed in the Scuderia Filippinetti colours: this swiss team has great history beetween 1960 and 1970 in sports car racing and Formula 1. They’re known for the red/white livery and for using mainly Ferrari cars but occasionally they ran also Lotus, Chevy and Ford.
Questa GT40 rossa indossava la livrea della Scuderia Filippinetti: questa squadra svizzera ha una grande storia risalente agli anni ’60 e ’70 nelle competizioni per vetture sport ed in Formula 1. Sono conosciuti per l’abbinamento bianco/rosso e per aver utilizzato principalmente vetture Ferrari anche se occasionalmente hanno portato in pista Lotus, Chevrolet e Ford.
The gold one driven by Claude Nahum was equipped with a powerful 7.0 liters V8 and stood out beetween the other more conventional liveries.
L’esemplare oro/champagne guidata da Claude Nahum era equipaggiato con un potente V8 da 7 litri e spiccava tra le altre auto con livree più convenzionali.
This 1967 Stingray was not running but with is its menacing black color scheme and chrome side pipes it really caught spectators eyes.
Questa Stingray del 1967 non ha preso parte alle gare ma con la sua minacciosa verniciatura nera con scarichi laterali cromati ha catturato l’attenzione di numerosi spettatori.
One of the most impressive subjects at the event was this monster Corvette in a full star & stripes livery: it’s best known as the Greenwood Corvette Widebody Customer Car – or the Batmobile, as everybody called it back in the days. It is based on a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette but it had been totally rebuilt by John Greenwood to race in the IMSA championship.
Uno dei mezzi più incredibili tra quelli presenti all’evento era questa mostruosa Corvette in livrea superpatriottica a stelle e strisce: è meglio conosciuta come Greenwood Corvette Widebody Customer Car – o Batmobile, come tutti la chiamavano ai tempi. É bastaa su una Chevrolet Corvette del 1974 e vene interamente ricostruita da John Greenwood per partecipare al campionato IMSA.
Its unbelievable proportions make it look like an out-of-scale Hot Wheels: super wide front and rear fenders, big lip on the trunk and the long hood with its generous bulge to house a mind-blowing 700 hp 7.4 liters alluminium big block. Thanks to this unit the car set a number of records around United States, collecting victories in Daytona, Talladega and Road Atlanta in 1974 and 1975 seasons. Unfortunately the car was not running on the track but it was exposed in a very tight stand. Hope to see it running soon!
Le sue incredibili proporzioni la fanno sembrare una Hot Wheels fuori scala: carreggiate maggiorate con giganteschi passaruota, grande alettone posteriore ed un lunghissimo cofano il cui cospicuo rigonfiamento ospita un potentissimo Big Block interamente in alluminio da 7, 4 litri ed oltre 700 cavalli. Grazie a questa poderosa unità la vettura stabilì diversi record negli Stati Uniti, raccogliendo vittorie a Daytona, Talladega e Road Atlanta nelle stagioni 1974 e 1975. Purtroppo la macchina non era attrezzata per scendere in pista ma è rimasta esposta in uno stand piuttosto stretto, il che ha reso difficile scattarle qualche foto decente. Spero di vederla in azione prima o poi!
There were other interesting Vettes, although less extreme that the previous one: this white/blue one form ZL1racing was pretty cool. It’s a replica built by Patrick Guadard around an original frame with a totally rebuilt big block engine.
C’erano altre Corvette interessanti anche se meno estreme della precedente: questo esemplare bianco/blu della ZL1racing era particolarmente figo. Si tratta di una replica costruita da Patrick Guadard attorno ad un telaio originale con un motore Big Block completamente ricostruito,
This red one instead showed a particular convertible layout with a strong rollbar to protect the driver from injuries. I’m not sure if this configuration gives any advantage but it looks different out on the track and that’s enough for me. I’m a fan of the transparent double bubble cover on the headlights.
Questo esemplare rosso è invece basato su un telaio convertible con un robusto rollbar a proteggere il pilota da eventuali danni. Non sono sicuro che questa configurazione aperta dia qualche vantaggio ma è qualcosa di diverso e questo per me è sufficiente. Amo in particolare le coperture plastiche trasparenti a bolla sui fanali anteriori.
Side-exit exhaust are really a sign of the C2 and C3 generation and a superbe addiction to their shapes. They can be chromed, ceramic coated or blacked out but their presence is a remainder of what lies under the hood.
Gli scarichi lateralisono una vera firma per le generazioni C2 e C3 della Corvette a una bellissimo dettaglio da aggiungere alle loro linee. Che siano cromate, coperte in materiale ceramico o con vernice nera termoresistente esse sono un eccellente promemoria riguardo a ciò che giace sotto i cofani.
In the paddock area i spotted this mean looking GT40 MkII: you can easily notice all the differences beetween this version and the MkI.
Nell’area retrostante i box ho trovato questa GT40 MkII in una minacciosa livrea nero/argento: si possono facilmente notare tutte le differenze tra questa versione e la MkI.
Under the body there was a pristine Gurney Eagle engine which was the designated unit for the homologated street versione in 1967
Sotto il voluminoso cofano posteriore trova posto un immacolato motore Gurney Eagle che era la scelta per la versione stradale omologata nel 1967.
The interior is a blaze of analogic goodness with so many gauges that it’s hard to find a place vor everyone of them on the dashboard.
Gli interni sono un tripudio di strumentazione analogica e ci sono così tanti indicatori che è difficile trovare un posto per ognuno sul cruscotto.
No exotic materials or carbon fiber here, only classic metal shaping and welding.
Niente materiali esotici o fibra di carbonio qui, solo metallo modellato e saldato.
Beyond all the US cars we’ve to remember that many sports car from the 60s and 70s were using American power under their bodies. So the overall soundtrack was quite different from what one could expect seeing the badges of many entries.
Oltre alle auto americane dobbiamo ricordare che molte vetture sport degli anni 60 e 70 utilizzavano cavalli statunitensi sotto le carrozzerie. Per cui la colonna sonora generale era piuttosto differente da quella che uno si può aspettare guardando gli stemmi dei vari partecipanti.
