A bug’s life – part 2

I always keep my promises so let’s check some mental vags that were hitting the strip. All of them used the epic flat 4 engine but while some had a soft tuning, others went for serious power and torque increase thanks to bigger displacements, bigger carbs, open exhaust, forced induction (mechanical and/or chemical). Their noise is something you wouldn’t expect from this type of car: you may think these modifies are only to improve their visual impact but you’ve to change your mind about it because these bugs are fast enough to stay ahead many powerful modern machines. The less modified can run the 1/4 mile in about 14 seconds while proper drag-spec built took the 10/11 seconds mark, something you wouldn’t believe until you see it with your own eyes. Its’ incredibly funny to see this shape struggling to put down every hp on the asphalt and it’s even funnier when they defeat Vettes, Muscles, modern and expensive cars. Aesthetically they keep the familiar feeling: steel bumpers are removed, interiors stripped but with iconic details almost untouched. The engine cover is lifted or removed in order to improve cooling and show all that mechanic goodness. Exhaust systems are really insane and in i particular i dig the single center “megaphone” muffler. One thing i really was impressed by was the start moment: when the driver disengages the clutch the torque makes the engine shake violently but everything is under control and the bug revs high gear after gear putting down serious speed. All the competitors showed period and style correct graphics and i’m very careful for these details. When some unwritten “rules” are respected the all movement is more trustworthy.  You’ll notice that there is an outsider among these bugs, it’s a white and brown VW combi but don’t let you fool by its aspect: believe me, it’s a true beast. It has been completely stripped out and its body is made of fiberglass and light materials: inside there is a  complete rollcage and a stroked 2300 cc engine that allows it to reach unbelievable performance. In the flesh it’s absolutely astonishing. Enjoy all this air cooled coolness, hope to find some more  soon!

Mantengo sempre le promesse per cui godiamoci una selezione delel Volkswagen che si sono sfidate sul quarto di miglio. Tutte adottavano l’epico quattro cilindri boxer ma mentre alcuni avevano solo modifiche lievi, altri vantavano considerevoli aumenti di potenza e coppia grazie a cilindrate maggiorate, carburatori più grandi, scarichi aperti, induzioni forzate (meccaniche e/o chimiche). Il loro suono è qualcosa che non ci si aspetta da questo tipo di auto: potreste pensare che si tratti di modifiche atte a implementare solamente il loro impatto visivo ma dovete ricredervi perchè questi maggiolini sono sufficientemente veloci da tener testa a molte potentissime auto contemporanee. Le meno modificate riescono a percorrere i 400 metri in circa 14 secondi mentre i mezzi appositamente costruiti per il drag li bruciano in 10/11 secondi, qualcosa che non ci si aspetterebbe finchè non lo si vede con i propri occhi. E’ assolutamente divertente vedere queste forme così particolari fa rdi tutto per mettere ogni cavallo sull’asfalto ed è ancora più divertente quando danno la paga a Corvette, Muscle car, auto moderne e costose. Esteticamente mantengono l’aspetto familiare: vengono rimossi i paraurti di metallo, svuotati gli interni ma lasciando pressochè intatti i dettagli iconici del cruscotto. La copertura del motore viene sollevata o rimossa per migliorare il raffreddamento e mostrare tutte le meraviflie meccaniche. I sistemi di scarico in particolare sono qualcosa di incredibile e in particolare apprezzo molto il lunghissimo terminale centrale a megafono. Un cosa che mi ha lasciato particolarmente sorpreso è il momento della partenza: quando il pilota lascia la frizione la coppia fa scuotere il motore violentemente da un lato all’altro ma tutto è sotto controllo – essendo una caratteristica comune – e subito il maggiolino si lancia urlando marcia dopo marcia raggiungendo considerevoli velocità. Tutti i partecipanti mostravano grafiche e livree correttamente realizzate per ispirazione stilistica e cronologica: sono molto attento a questi dettagli. Quando alcune regole non scritte vengono rispettate tutto il movimento diventa immediatamente più credibile. Noterete che c’è un intruso tra tutti questi beetle, è un VW combi bianco e marrone ma non lasciatevi ingannare dall’aspetto: credetemi, è una vera belva. E’ stato completamente svuotato e la carrozzeria è fatta di vetroresina e materiali leggeri: all’interno è stato sistemato un rollbar completo ed un motore da 2300 cc che gli permette di raggiungere prestazioni incredibili. Dal vero è assolutamente stupefacente. Godetevi tutta questa figosità raffreddata ad aria, spero di trovarne altra presto!
