That’s all, Volks!

Maybe this time i’ve gone too far: 158 photos in 1 post is just too much i think but it was almost impossible to separate them. I’ve tried (like i always do when it’s time to organize all the stuff i collect around) to find topics, stories, styles or whatever could let me divide the folder into different articles.

Forse questa volta ho esagerato: 158 foto in un articolo è davvero troppo credo  ma è stato impossibile separarle. Ho provato (come faccio sempre quando è il momento di organizzare tutta la roba che raccolgo in giro) a cercare argomenti, filoni, storie o qualsiasi cosa mi permettesse di dividere la cartella in sottogruppi differenti.

But after all i understood that it was not the right way to approach a coverage of an event like the Volks’n’Roll. It would be a mistake to try to close off something among the rest because the  variety and  mixing of different experiences is its real plus.

Ma alla fine ho capito che non era il modo corretto di approcciare un reportage di un evento come il Volks’n’Roll.  Sarebbe un errore cercare di isolare qualcosa dal resto perchè la varietà e il miscuglio di esperienze differenti rappresentano il suo vero valore aggiunto.

The Volks’n’Roll is in fact like a pilgrimage for aircooled lovers, the ones who enjoy their rides like life partners, time machines and vehicles for exploration.

Il Volks’n’Roll rappresenta infatti un vero e proprio pellegrinaggio per gli amanti dei mezzi raffreddati ad aria, per coloro che se li godono come compagni di vita, macchine del tempo e veicoli per l’esplorazione.

It’s not about speed, power or performance: yeah, there are some pretty hardcore engine around but that’s not the point. Here they celebrate the main feature of these “cars” (should we still call them simply cars?): to make people smile and enjoy their lives.

Non si tratta di velocità, potenza, prestazioni: si è vero, ci sono motori in grado di fare la voce grossa ma non è quello il punto. Qui si celebra la principale peculiarità di queste “macchine” (dovremmo davvero continuare a chiamarla semplicemente macchine?): far sorridere le persone e aiutarle a godersi la vita.

Walking around you can find cool guys showing off their ground-scraping lowriders, travelers from southern europe on their customized splits, vintage enthusiasts with perfectly restored models, parties addicted and many more.

Girando per il grande prato ci si può imbattere in tipi stilosi che mostrano orgogliosi i loro mezzi ribassati fino a raschiare per terra, viaggiatori da tutta l’Europa meridionale sui loro split modificati, appassionati fedeli al look originale con i loro modelli perfettamente restaurati e conservati e ragazzi che arrivano fin qui richiamati dalla possibilità di festeggiare tutta la notte.

The same goes for the cars that are parked everywhere in an incredible mix of references, styles, story. There’s a kind of physical connection, like the car was an extention of its owner.

Lo stesso vale per le auto parcheggiate un po’ dovunque in un incredibile mix di riferimenti, stili, storie. Esiste una specie di connessione fisica, quasi come se l’auto fosse un’estensione del suo proprietario.

I’ve been to many different meetings in my experience (supercars, vintage cars, historic racing cars, single-brand motorcycles) but i have to admit no one can express the same energy that old volks can give.

Ho partecipato a molti raduni differenti nella mia esperienza (supercar, auto d’epoca, vetture storiche da corsa, monomarca auto/moto) ma devo ammettere che nessuno di questi  è in grado di sprigionare la stessa energia che i vecchi VW sono in grado di dare.

I discovered this kind of feeling two years ago, at my fist Hills Race, when i find myself surrounded by tenths of bugs, everyone with its personality and worthwhile an accurate observation.

Ho scoperto questa sensazione due anni fa circa, al mio primo Hills Race, quando mi trovai circondato da decine di maggiolini, ognuno con la sua personalità e degno di accurate osservazioni.

I’ve been following the US scene for many years and i got used to see stanced beetles and splits over there but i didn’t know such a great presence could live around me.

Seguo la scena americana da molti anni ormai e mi sono abituato a vedere maggiolini e van modificati ma non immaginavo che simili presenze potessero esistere così vicino a me.

As a photographer a customized aircooled VW is something like a trump card: i think it’s almost impossible not to get a decent pic out of it. Every trick it’s useful to make normal cars stand out here in ehanced 100 times.

Come fotografo una vecchia VW customizzata è sempre una carta vincente: credo sia quasi impossibile non tirarne fuori una foto decente. Ogni trucco utilizzato per cercare di evidenziare le auto “convenzionali” qui funziona 100 volte tanto.

So i suppose you’re starting to understand why i’m so excited when someone speaks to me about these kind of events and most of all why i always find myself overhelmed by thousands of pics that i cannot ignore.

Suppongo quindi che stiate iniziando a capire perchè io sia così eccitato quando qualcuno mi parla di questo tipo di eventi e soprattutto perchè mi trovi sempre subissato da migliaia di foto che non posso proprio permettermi di ignorare. 

In addiction, just to make things even harder, the Volks’n’Roll takes place in one of the best locations you can find: a beautiful valley on the Alps, surroundes by the mountains and covered with a late-spring blue sky. Really i can’t think about a better set to shoot.

Inoltre, tanto per rendere le cose ancora più “difficili” il Volks’n’Roll ha luogo in una delle situazioni migliori che si possano trovare: una fantastica vallata sulle Alpi, circondata dalle montagne sotto un cielo azzurrissimo di fine primavera. Davvero non riesco a pensare a un set migliore per degli scatti.

In these occasions i tend to become even more anxious than usual because i realize that there are a lot of cool cars, a lot of cool people, a perfect weather and a magnificent set so it’s obvious that every image should come out great: and if it isn’t so, it must be my fault.

In queste occasioni tendo a diventare ancora più ansioso del solito perchè mi rendo conto che ci sono un sacco di auto fighe, gente non banale, un meteo perfetto ed un’ambientazione magnifica per cui appare ovvio che ogni immagine debba uscire alla grande: e se così non è deve essere per forza colpa mia.

I’d like to try to tell you about one particular car or another but it’s realy hard to find one among the others: honestly i’m huge fan of the stanced modesl, those which challenge physics  and sits on the ground not giving a fuck about comfort, practice and laws.

Mi piacerebbe raccontarvi di qualche auto in particolare ma è davvero dura trovarne una in mezzo alle altre: a dire il vero ho un debole per i modelli ultra-ribassati, quelli che sfidano la fisica e si appoggiano sul terreno, fregandosene altamente di comodità, praticità e leggi varie.

To give further appeal to the event, it covers all the week end so almost all of those who arrive here camp near their cars or in their vans: when the sun goes down the second part of the name – “‘n’Roll” – finds its meaning.

Ad aggiungere ulteriore fascino al raduno c’è da considerare il fatto che esso si snoda su ben 3 giorni per tutto il fine settimana per cui quasi tutti i partecipanti piantano le loro tende a fianco alle auto o soggiornano direttamente nei loro furgoncini: quando il sole tramonta poi la seconda parte dle nome – “n’Roll” – trova il suo significato.

On fryday and saturday night different bands alternate on the stage to entertain the crowd. Unfortunately, due to work (or the lack of it) this year i couldn’t enjoy this meeting as i planned but i’m looking forward for next year’s edition.

Il venerdì e sabato notte numerose band si alternano sul palco per intrattenere la folla. Purtroppo a causa del lavoro (o della mancanza di esso) quest’anno non sono riuscito a godermi l’evento come avevo pianificato ma non vedo l’ora di partecipare alla prossima edizione.

And i couldn’t try to desribe anything because all my friends out there are ready to underline all my mistakes and question me on which year one detail belong to and how i should recognize a particular model year. So i won’t take risks in this minefield and i’ll let images speak for themselves. Enjoy the phots and, beleieve me or not, there is even a part two on the way!

E non potrei nemmeno descrivere nulla in dettaglio perchè i miei amici là fuori mi aspettano al varco per sottolineare tutti i miei errori e interrogarmi sull’esatta provenienza temporale di questo o quel dettaglio, su come dovrei riconoscerli ed attribuirli ad un modello piuttosto che ad un altro. Per cui non mi arrischierò in questo campo minato e lascerò siano le immagini a parlare da sole. Godetevi le foto e, credeteci o no, c’è ancora una parte due in allestimento!
